A total of 6 prizes were awarded to best performers at the Readathon event held at Hashiyana Primary School (HPS) yesterday, Thursday, September 29. The event was sponsored by Chicco Group of Companies, Dr. Mvula M’nyango and Build it. They were all among attendees.
Five schools, represented by 4 learners each, took part in what organizers call a successful event. They had to compete in the geophonic, reading and spelling bee competitions with three prizes won by individual and group categories.
In the individual category, the first and second prizes were won by learners from HPS with the third prize taken by Charles Anderson Combined School (CACS). The first place was awarded with 3 novel books with the second place taking 2 novel books while the third place took 1 novel book.

In the school category, HPS scooped the first and second place walking away with 2 trophies. CACS walked away with the third trophy for the third place.
The Readathon Week is an annual national celebration organized by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to highlight the importance of reading. Commemorated every last week of September, the event is aimed at encouraging children and reluctant readers to read for pleasure.
“Everything went on well. The learners behaved. Schools showed up and the sponsors too. Saying ‘thank you’ is not enough,” remarked Ms. Erick, the school librarian.
